Melody’s Echo Chamber came to The Belasco at the tail end of their 'Unclouded' tour, celebrating the artist’s 4th studio album of the same title. The release has gained a lot of positive attention from both critics and long-time fans, due to the refined and enchanting sound that Melody Prochet is known for.Texas-based indie rock group Strange Lot opened with their vibey, psych-adjacent sound. A song to note, "Nobody Seems To Do The Math," is broody and ominous. It feels like drifting down a lazy river in a vaporwave desert, or sinking into your couch as you fall asleep. The drums build and crash like waves against a rocky shore–it was a great track to unwind to. I thoroughly enjoyed the energy of their set, and hope to see them back in LA in the future. After a brief intermission, Melody’s Echo Chamber emerged with opening track "Eyes Closed," its ethereal sound immediately capturing our attention. Space age came to mind when I first heard this project, Melody’s head-voice soprano cutting through layers of vibey guitars and funky bass. Alongside the music, Melody is extremely fun to watch perform. She dances around the stage and whips her hair while the band is jams around her. The middle of the set was the most interesting for me with "Crystallized." The track builds and builds on a repetitive motif until you get a discordant crash of static and distortion, like it’s ripping out the threads of a musical sweater, or burning a film reel while you are watching it. "Snowcapped Andes Crash" is similar, with a dreamy opening and thunderous end."I Follow You," the clear fan favorite made obvious by the sea of phones that sprang up, was another highlight of the night before the show closed with "Daisy."It's bubbly and positive air left the crowd begging for more, and the band came back with "Shirim," another beloved song from her discography. The band had an extended jam session at the end of the encore, showcasing the immense technical talent of her touring members.
Melody’s Echo Chamber is a dynamite act for indie and psych lovers to catch, her music’s meta elements and sonic layering are ear candy for people who love to listen to something over and over to hear a different element. I can’t wait to see what she produces next.
